Gabrielle (Renee O'Connor) began Xena: Warrior Princess as a naive young woman fleeing an arranged marriage and relying on Xena (Lucy Lawless) to be her protector.
But after six seasons, Gabrielle was more than capable of looking after herself and, also sometimes, Xena.
It was heavily implied throughout the series that the pair had formed a romantic attachment but it was only several years after the show finished that producers confirmed Xena and Gabrielle were indeed a couple.
