Saw Boogeyman 2 at Scream Fest 2007. Unlike
the first Boogeyman this one is more of a slasher movie,
along the lines of Halloween or Nightmare. The movie starts
out with a brother and sister witnessing what they believed
to be the boogeyman killing their parents. As adults they
both suffer from a phobia concerning the boogeyman. The
brother has just graduated from treatment and the sister is
sort of forced into treatment for this phobia.
One of the interesting things about this
movie is the phobia's all the patients in the treatment
program suffer from and how that plays into the movie. The
film is all shot in the hospital setting. The lighting and
feel of the movie gives that 30's 40's men in white
coats psycho ward. I kept expecting the ghost of Randle
Patrick McMurphy to come flying down the hall at any minute.
I was impressed in knowing the 17 day
shooting schedule they worked with. Also the music is
a big player in the movie, as it was in 30 Days of Night.
Renee plays the secondary doctor in hospital,
but the main doctor in the girls treatment program. This
treatment program in fairly new and she spends time
defending it to who I assume is her boss. Renee's character
is very sympatric, rational, and professional..and she
plays it all very well. I'm still not sure if this was part
of the character or my knowledge of Renee's career that made
me feel this way, but once all hell starts breaking loose at
the hospital Renee/Dr. Ryan seems to take it all in such
stride that I found it a bit humorous. Not to take
anything away from the character or Renee, she is great.
I will say there are some funny parts in the
film and Dr. Ryan is in the middle of most of the them.
The kids/young adults that play the patients are really good
also. They each have very different phobia's, but
being typical kids they don't cut each other any slack and
make fun of each others fears. Leaving the door wide open
for the things to start to happen and no one believes
anyone slasher cycle to begin.
It is a fairly fast paced movie and once
things start going wrong it really speeds up. Unlike some
slasher films I was surprised (twice) at the end. I think
there are going to be parts of this film that the fans love
and parts they will hate, but I'm sure they will all love
seeing Renee on the screen. It was nice to be able to see it
on the big screen. I'm sorry others will not get to
experience it that way, but it's worth a watch when it comes
out on DVD.
Congratulations to Renee. Once again she was
great!
