Renee's Movie Fitful Gets A Distributor

ImageRenee's movie Fitful now has a distributor.

"Fitful" follows Renee as Paula, an inspector for the historic trust who visits an old ship after Vigs, the vessel's "self-appointed caretaker" played by Campbell, files an application for historical status. Car trouble requires Paula to stay overnight on the ship, which leads to the creepiness that makes the film "a very, very dark comedy" filled with suspense.

Renee's 'Fitful' movie to premier in Manistee

LDN Staff - Wednesday, January 6, 2010

MANISTEE -- Area residents will have a chance at a Jan. 16 sneak peek of the movie "Fitful," which was shot in Manistee during September 2009.

The movie stars Renee O'Connor -- known best as Gabrielle in "Xena: Warrior Princess" -- and Larry Joe Campbell -- who plays Andy, Jim Belushi's sidekick in "According to Jim" -- and was shot mostly on the retired Lake Michigan carferry the SS City of Milwaukee.

"Fitful" was made by Brauer Productions of Traverse City and the company calls it a dark comedy/suspense feature written and directed by 2009 Michigan Film Maker of the Year Rich Brauer. [...]

In the film, Paula (Renee O'Connor) is an inspector for the Historic Trust who visits an abandoned ship on a desolate waterfront. She meets up with the self-appointed caretaker, Vigs (Larry Joe Campbell), who blindly made the application for historical status. Moments after her arrival, her car is disabled and she is far from town and is stuck for the night.

Without other options, she takes him up on his offer to spend the night. What follows is a sleepless night of bad dreams and creepy reality.

O'Connor has held numerous roles since she started her career directly out of high school and she gained a huge following as Gabrielle on "Xena: Warrior Princess." [...]

"Renee and Larry and the rest of the cast were the perfect fit, and it was a pleasure to bring them to Michigan. They both understood the story and brought a lot to the table. This is a unique film that Hollywood wouldn't make, and that makes me happy," said Brauer.

A special one-showing sneak peek of the new film "Fitful" is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16 at the Ramsdell Theatre in Manistee. Admission is $5.

Tickets can be purchased in advance at www.ci.manistee.mi.us or www.treatickets.com.

Tickets can also be purchased at the Ramsdell Theatre box office starting at 5:30 p.m. the day of the event, cash only.

Renee Attends "Fitful" Premiere

ImageThe newest Brauer Productions independent feature Fitful played to a sold out audience Wednesday night at the Traverse City State Theatre. Both stars of the film, Actors Larry Joe Campbell and Renee O'Connor, flew in from Los Angeles to attend the event.

"The fact that 600 people turned out to watch our movie the week before Christmas is another testament to just how supportive of film this community is. A big part of the reason I have been able to keep making films is this amazing place and the people I share it with," said Brauer.

Michael Moore introduced the film and Brauer, O'Connor and Campbell fielded questions from the audience and talked about their experiences making the movie after the showing. Read More

"FitFul" To Premiere On 16 December 2009

ImageTRAVERSE CITY -- Director and writer Rich Brauer is letting his hometown have the first look at his latest film.

"Fitful," a dark comedy/suspense movie starring Larry Joe Campbell and Renee O'Connor, will screen at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 16 at the State Theatre in downtown Traverse City. The movie was filmed this fall, with many scenes taking place on board the historic ship S.S. City of Milwaukee in Manistee.

"That's the fun thing about this. When you do a movie in a community, the community likes to look at the movie because of all the landmarks," Brauer said.

But the ship audiences will see in the movie has been transformed with "dramatic camera work" and lighting that turns it into a creepy setting that matches the actors' skillful performances, he said.

Rich Brauer's latest movie set is on historic ship

In a corner, the film's stars rehearsed lines. Blond-haired Renee
O'Connor, known for her role as Gabrielle on "Xena: Warrior Princess," was already dressed in her character's short-sleeved plaid blouse. A bearded Larry Joe Campbell, recognizable from his turn as Andy on the sitcom "According to Jim," wore soil-streaked coveralls with slightly
frayed cuffs.

"Fitful" follows O'Connor as Paula, an inspector for the historic trust who visits an old ship after Vigs, the vessel's "self-appointed caretaker" played by Campbell, files an application for historical status. Car trouble requires Paula to stay overnight on the ship, which leads to the creepiness that makes the film "a very, very dark comedy" filled with suspense, Brauer said.

During a break from filming, the two actors discussed the film and its setting. Campbell said the old ship provided an authentic backdrop that couldn't be recreated.

"I feel this ship dictated the tone of the performance. The script actually has a lot of comedy," said O'Connor, who called the ferry the film's "third character."

At one point in the dialogue, O'Connor delivered the line "What was that?" Just then, accidentally on-cue, a distant whistle sounded.

"That's a train," Campbell improvised in a dead-pan response. The crew cracked up.

O'Connor learned of the project through an agency Brauer used. She found the piece to be "cleverly written," and Brauer thought she brought the perfect mix of beauty and toughness to the part.

"Renee is this little person who you could believe could try to tackle the dark side that might be facing her," he said.

StarScoop Interviews Renee About Fitful Movie

renee_oconnorfitful.jpg

The StarScoop Site has a very interesting interview with Renee about her upcoming movie Fitful (which is due for release to DVD planned for the US winter months).

The Star Scoop:

How did you become involved in Fitful?

Renee O'Connor:

A casting director approached me. She was casting for Rich [Brauer, the writer/director]. She sent me the script and said, quote, "I hope you get this" [laughs]. I thought it was great, the reason being is that it has a very peculiar tone to it. It's a dark comedy/thriller. I was intrigued by the comedy aspect and when I realized the writer was going to be the director, I thought it would be a good fit for me. It's such a specific tone that I thought that the writer needed to direct this to get the tone to come across on screen. I really didn't do much research on Rich; I didn't know much about him at all.

That's not my usual style. I usually try to find out what someone's done and how much experience they have and if they are a first time director. And if so, then I usually call and try to get an idea of what they're going for. With Rich, I didn't at all. I just completely went by an instinct based on the script. The script, again, was so quirky and interesting. After I finished the script, it probably took me an hour to try to figure out what the whole thing was about. Then I called back and said I'd love to do it. It was just a matter of Rich looking at my reel and figuring out if I was a good match for him. And that's how that worked out.
